Come with us to explore the other side of city life – the not so glamorous side.

During our time in Cleveland, we will have an opportunity to do some direct service, talk to those afflicted by poverty, discuss issues with local social service agencies, and more. The visit will give 10 volunteers an opportunity to see some of the desperate human suffering that exists in our urban areas. It will put a face to the plight of the homeless, poor and disenfranchised.

The cost of the trip is $35, which covers transportation, food and lodging at the Catholic Worker House on the West Side.

Kent State University’s School of Theatre and Dance continues its 2009-10 season with the production of Rent. Music, lyrics and script are by Jonathan Larson, and it is directed by Terri Kent. The production will run Oct. 30, 31, Nov. 4, 5, 6, 7, 2009, at 8 p.m. and Nov. 1 and 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. in E. Turner Stump Theatre in the Music and Speech Center, 1325 Theatre Drive in Kent.

Rent is the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side during the thriving days of Bohemian, Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS. Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème, the show has won a Pulitzer Prize, gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical, among other awards.

Tickets are available by calling 330-672-2497 weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. or online at www.theatre.kent.edu. Adults are $16; seniors, KSU alumni, staff and faculty $12; and students $8. The box office accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

The campus tour begins with a 30-minute presentation previewing Kent State University and the admissions process.

The walking portion of the tour lasts 90 minutes and includes select academic and student services buildings, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and model residence hall rooms.

Admissions counselors are available for individual meetings on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Presentation and public discussion with reporter Lauri Lebo, author of The Devil in Dover : An Insider's Story of Dogma v. Darwin in Small-Town America, which is about the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District intelligent design trial. The story is told through her own perspective as a local reporter on the trial as she confronted her own attitudes about organized religion and her father who was a fundamentalist Christian.

This session is an introduction to using CommonSpot and the new functionality of the redesigned site. There will also be open lab sessions later this year where you can ask for help with specific topics.

Over the past three years, this event welcomed hundreds of students, community members and entrepreneurs to the Kent Campus. This high energy event is designed to provide students and entrepreneurial community members with the tools, resources and motivation needed to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, leading to success in careers and in life. The extravaganza includes several workshops, panel discussions and speakers on various entrepreneurial topics.

The Entrepreneurship Extravaganza will kick off Thursday, Nov. 5, in the new Entrepreneurial Classroom at Prentice Hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The event will continue onto Friday beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m. The schedule of events is seperated into two different tracks targeting two levels of entrepreneurs:

1. PRELAUNCH: This track is targeted toward beginner and intermediate entrepreneurs and is designed to provide guidance. This track will help emerging entrepreneurs and will answer any questions they have and cover topics such as:

November in Kent is synonymous with the Kent State Folk Festival. Students, community members, artists and musicians are set to make their way to more than 35 Kent venues over the course of nine days.

"This year promises riveting moments of sound, heart-touching introspection, cultural expansion, fun and excitement," says Robert Burford, public relations director for WKSU-FM.

One of the well-known features of the festival is the Folk Alley 'Round Town, which is a night full of musicians and bands in venues throughout Kent. Bars, churches, local restaurants and other businesses are immersed in the local celebration of a music genre that transcends age.

Lesser known features of the festival include free community workshops at the Kent Student Center on Nov. 14. Workshops that will be offered this year include "Blues Harmonica," "CD Quality Demos,” “Beginning Clogging” and "The Art of the Ensemble."

Here is the lineup for the 43rd Kent State Folk Festival (all events/activities are subject to change):

Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music and The Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series will present a free concert on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at 8 p.m. in Severance Hall. Featuring The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, the concert will also feature the nationally-recognized Miami String Quartet as they perform the Ohio premiere of a piano and string septet.
The event will be in the Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance Hall, 11001 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. Reservations are not required. Seating is free and open to the public and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is available at the Campus Center Garage for a fee.
The program will begin with Boccherini's Cello Quintet in E major for Strings G. 275 (Op. 11, No. 5). Highlighting the evening’s performance will be the Ohio premiere of Pultizer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Piano and String Septet. Possibly the first-ever work written for this combination of instruments, Zwilich's Septet was commissioned by the Kennedy Center's Abe Fortas Memorial Fund. The program will close with Schumann Quintet for Piano and Strings in E-flat Major, Op. 44

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of the premiere of this impressive work,” said Dr. John Crawford, interim dean of the College of the Arts. “It is thanks to The Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series that we are able to offer such a desirable concert to the community.”

After three decades appearing in the world's major concert halls, commissioning spectacular new works and maintaining an active recording agenda, The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio continues to dazzle audiences and critics alike with their unparalleled artistry. Since making their debut at the White House for President Carter's inauguration in January 1977, pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson have set the standard for performance of the piano trio literature.
The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio opened the 2008-09 season at Wigmore Hall in London with a complete cycle of Beethoven’s Trios. This season the award-winning Trio is also celebrating the 70th birthdays of two distinguished composers with performances of works written specifically for them: Joan Tower’s For Daniel, and the world premiere of Ellen Zwilich’s Septet in collaboration with The Miami String Quartet, who serves as Kent State University School of Music’s Quartet-in-Residence.
The Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series is made possible by a generous gift to the College of the Arts from David “Max” and Cecile “Cil” Draime, in memory of their dear friend, Tom Schroth. Their vision brings distinguished professionals in architecture, visual art, music, theatre and dance to Kent State University to share interdisciplinary experiences with students, faculty and the community. Presented in conjunction with Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music which recently launched its “Hit the Right Chord” Steinway campaign earlier this year, The School of Music strives for further excellence by becoming an all-Steinway Piano School.

Tsipi Keller was born in Prague, raised in Israel, and has been living in the United States since 1974. She is the recipient of several literary awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship, and an Armand G. Erpf award from Columbia University. Her novels include Jackpot and Retelling. Keller has also translated several poetry collections, including Dan Pagis’s Last Poems, Maya Bejerano’s The Hymns of Job and Other Poems, and Poets on the Edge: An Anthology of Contemporary Hebrew Poetry.

Public Safety, in partnership with the division of Human Resources, is conducting ALICE workshops. The 90-minute ALICE sessions are designed to give participants insight and response options when encountering an active shooter. ALICE -- Alert, Lockdown, Information, Counter and Evacuation -- is crisis training created by two Texas law enforcement officers.

This highly effective and “common sense” training has been readily adopted by many educational law enforcement institutions in Ohio and throughout the United States. The training is open to everyone but we are encouraging faculty and staff to take the time to attend one of the sessions. Hopefully you will never have to use the information you will learn, but if a situation does arise in a classroom or in an office, you will have an idea of what you can do to increase your survivability.

Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM), a graduate program of the College of Communication and Information’s School of Library and Information Science, will host a panel discussion on Kent State’s usability efforts on Nov. 12 in recognition of World Usability Day (WUD).

World Usability Day is a global event aimed at making technology more user-friendly and humanizing technology as an infrastructure for education, government, communication and other work areas. This year’s theme is “Designing for a Sustainable World.”

World Usability Day was founded in 2005 as an initiative of the Usability Professionals' Association to ensure that services and products important to human life are easier to access and as simple to use as a doorknob. Each year, on the second Thursday of November, groups across 43 countries organize more than 200 events to raise awareness and train professionals in the tools and issues central to good usability research, development and practice.

As part of World Usability Day celebrations, Information Architecture and Knowledge Management will present three speakers who will discuss sustainability issues relating to Kent State such as the redesign of the Kent.edu Web site. Panelists will include: Melanie Knowles, Kent State’s new sustainability manager, who will speak about the various ways sustainability can be manifested and used in an organization; Sameer Jaleel, Kent State manager of applications development, who will talk about the recent Kent.edu redesign from the user experience design perspective and how it relates to sustainability; and Matt Pahls, Kent State senior applications developer, who will speak of the integration of the variety of products for seamless use for students.

The panel discussion is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Room 332 of the Kent State Library on the Kent Campus. The conversation will also be streamed live on the day of the event. The event will be recorded for later viewing on the IAKM Web site.

The campus tour begins with a 30-minute presentation previewing Kent State University and the admissions process.

The walking portion of the tour lasts 90 minutes and includes select academic and student services buildings, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and model residence hall rooms.

Admissions counselors are available for individual meetings on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Once you submit your reservation, you will receive an immediate confirmation that you can print for future reference. We recommend scheduling your visit two weeks in advance if possible.

A listing of benefit meals would not be complete without the annual Spaghetti Dinner. Scheduled this year for Nov. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m., the event features the ever-popular pasta and meat sauce, salad, rolls, dessert and a beverage for a $10 advance purchase ticket. Senior adults and students are $7 and children between the ages of five and 11 are $5.50. Children under five are free with an adult admission.

Tickets for the spaghetti dinner go on sale Oct. 30. New this year is a take-out option: support the United Way when you pick up a hot meal for your family. Gift baskets are also being assembled for a raffle at this event. Tickets can be purchased from Peta Denno in the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Denno can be reached at 330-672-6322.

The African Community Theatre of Kent State University will present its first production of the 2009-2010 season. The drama, “For Better or For Worse,” is written by Cleveland playwright Dwayne M. Williams who has harnessed the essence of domestic violence through the characters’ dialogue.

“For Better or For Worse” sets the scene of a household ravaged by violent outrages, mental frustration and child abuse. Sophia is a wife, mother and daughter caught in a cycle of abuse by her alcoholic/gambler husband, William, while struggling to maintain her family. Williams’ deep-seeded anger manifests itself in the destruction of his family through self-pity and resentment of a loss of freedom. William’s successful jazz career takes a back seat to gambling away the family income.

According to the American Medical Association, as many as one out of three women has suffered from domestic violence. Domestic violence does not discriminate. It can happen in financially secure or economically disadvantaged families.

Directing “For Better or For Worse” is Kent State University’s Dr. Fran Dorsey, artistic director of the African Community Theatre. Dorsey is known for his numerous socially conscious and sometimes controversial productions in community/university theatre.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students and senior citizens. The play does contain adult themes and is not recommended for children. Production dates are Nov. 13-15 and 20-22. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 3 p.m. For further information and reservations, call 330-672-2300 or 330-672-0151.

A four-hour workshop, as part of the Fundamentals of Supervision series, that examines what supervisors must know regarding: Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (illegal discrimination), Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Harassment Prevention. This course will use case studies and video exercises to apply the information in a meaningful way so all participants can take a more active role in ensuring that their work environment is compliant with the employment laws and free from harassment.

Ideal participants are those individuals who are newer to supervisory roles or those individuals who are not currently serving in a supervisory capacity but would like to be.

Winner of the Best Director prize at Cannes, Three Monkeys tells a twisty, noirish tale that opens with an ambitious politician fleeing a hit-and-run accident. Afraid of hurting his election chances, he pays off his chauffeur, Eyüp, to take the rap.

The film concerns the effects of this devil’s bargain on Eyüp’s shiftless son Ismail who sees an expensive new car as his ticket to salvation, and on his restless wife, Hacer who develops an ill-deserved passion for the oily politico. Ismail’s discovery of his mother's infidelity and Eyüp's suspicions after he gets out of jail crank up the simmering tensions in a household already haunted by hidden ghosts.

Thank you for your interest in the Kent Community Dinner at Kent State University on Nov. 21. Due to an overwhelming response and limited seating for this dinner, we are no longer accepting registrations.

The next Kent Community Dinner will take place Dec. 19 at Christ Episcopal Church. We hope to see you there.

As part of its centennial celebration, Kent State University proudly hosts the Kent Community Dinner on Nov. 21. The free community event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the university’s ballroom, located on the second floor of the Kent Student Center. Instead of Kent’s traditional potluck Dinner where attendees bring a dish to share, Kent State will provide the entire meal for this Dinner free of charge. The menu will consist of popular international fare.

In response to Kent State’s generosity, each attendee is asked to be generous as well and bring nonperishable food items for donation to help those in the community who are less fortunate. The donations will be collected inside the Kent Student Center and distributed by Kent Social Services.

Public Safety, in partnership with the division of Human Resources, is conducting ALICE workshops. The 90-minute ALICE sessions are designed to give participants insight and response options when encountering an active shooter. ALICE -- Alert, Lockdown, Information, Counter and Evacuation -- is crisis training created by two Texas law enforcement officers.
