The School of Art and the Downtown Gallery presents:

Capture: Photographs by Drew Smith
May 22 - June 15 in the Downtown Gallery

The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, May 23, from 5-7 p.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Drew Smith produces an impressive body of images in his current exhibition at the Downtown Gallery. From capturing stillness and tranquility within landscapes to documenting dynamic urban cityscapes, his photographs capture an array of subjects and themes. Architecture becomes abstracted, and candid portraits suggest stories of his travels. Inspired by formal elements within the environment and his surroundings, Smith creates compelling, elegant and breathtaking compositions. It is these formal properties that build his imagery.

Raised in an artistic family in Akron, Ohio, he developed a passion for photography early in life. Having worked for a local studio as well as professional photography labs, Smith currently works as a portrait and event photographer and resides in Akron. Michelle Lopez, Sculptor

Michelle Lopez creates sculptures from a variety of materials and surfaces, including industrial aluminum sheeting and grip tape, as well as more organic items like tree limbs and leather. Her solo exhibitions include shows at Galerie Christophe Gaillard, Simon Preston, LA><ART and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. Lopez received her bachelor's degree in art history from Barnard College and her master of fine arts degree from the School of Visual Arts. The Public Lecture Series gives the general public an opportunity to hear from the top artists in the fields of painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics. The Kent Blossom Art program also includes two-week intensive workshops in these areas of study, available at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
